The Star of San Ysidro Ranch

The Speakeasy at San Ysidro Ranch joined Forbes Travel Guide’s list of the world’s most distinguished hotel bars.

The Speakeasy at San Ysidro Ranch is celebrating its newest accolade: a place on Forbes Travel Guide’s 2026 Hotel Star Bars list. Only five bars in the United States and 37 worldwide earned the distinction, making the occasion one worth raising a glass to. 

The July evening began in the Ranch’s rose gardens, where servers circulated with caviar service and guests mingled under the early evening light, a DJ keeping the mood going from turntables amongst the beds of flowers. Returning guests greeted staff by name, champagne and caviar doing their usual work. Rose-lined pathways and immaculate landscaping framed the evening flawlessly. Every bloom looked as though it had been groomed for the occasion.

Then came the sabrage: a sword drawn across the neck of a champagne bottle, the glass cleaving off clean in a single motion. The crack of it drew an audible gasp, then applause, then a fresh round of flutes. It was the moment the evening stopped being a garden party and became a celebration.

From there, the crowd made its way down through a discreet doorway beneath the Stonehouse Restaurant and into The Speakeasy itself. The lighting was moody, a live trio playing near the entrance, everything in the space oozing vintage glamour. The atmosphere made it feel like a hidden world sitting just under the Ranch’s more familiar gardens and cottages. Seafood towers sat at every table, tier after tier of chilled shellfish arranged with the same precision that carried through every detail of the evening. Sliders and a delicate hamachi followed, while a limited-edition cocktail menu nodded to the bars The Speakeasy now shares a list with. Each drink drawing inspiration from Latin America: Velvet Vistas, gin-based with pisco and purple corn, nodding to Peru’s iconic Chica Morada and the purple-hued mountains above the gardens just outside; Doctor’s Orders, a mischievous spin on Brazil’s caipirinha; Secret Stash, built on Ecuador’s coffee culture with black walnut bitters and banana liqueur; Key to the Club, a tequila blanco sour echoing Cuba’s guava and cream cheese pastry; and, for guests skipping the alcohol, Amethyst Elixir, a Peru-inspired spritz of hibiscus, blood orange, apple, and pineapple.

Dessert brought cajeta cookies and churros as flamenco dancers moved through the space, a last small burst of excitement before the night began to wind down. Guests lingered near the bar just to watch the bartenders work their magic—the pours, the garnishes, the whole performance of it.

Forbes Travel Guide’s Hotel Star Bars are selected through incognito inspections conducted globally as part of its annual Star Ratings, with bars judged on their beverage programs, service, and atmosphere. Ian Williams, SYR’s General Manager, said the recognition reflects the passion and creativity of the beverage team, tying the win to the broader hospitality legacy that's defined the property for decades. For a bar tucked beneath one of California’s most storied hotels, the win reads less like a breakthrough and more like the next chapter of something already established. 

Behind the bar, the spirits collection backs that reputation up: a Glenturret 50-Year-Old Highland Single Malt housed in a Lalique black crystal decanter—the only bottle of its kind available for tasting in North America—alongside a Macallan M Trio and an exclusive pour from the Balvenie DCS Chapter Four series. There’s a tableside absinthe fountain service for guests who want some spectacle with their spirits, and a new summer cocktail menu built around playful, experience-driven drinks, including a ceremonial-grade Matcha Mar-Tea-Ni. Every pour on the menu felt like it was meant to be the centerpiece, which tracks, since I can only imagine that’s something Forbes inspectors look for.

The award adds to an already long list of accolades for San Ysidro Ranch, which has also been recognized by the MICHELIN Guide, The World’s 50 Best Hotels, Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List, and Travel + Leisure’s Top 100 Resorts in the World, among others. After a night spent moving from the rose gardens down to the hidden bar beneath the Stonehouse, it’s easy to see why the recognition keeps coming.

Beyond The Speakeasy, the Ranch’s 550 acres of gardens, its 38 vine-draped cottages, and its Wine Spectator Grand Award-winning cellar—home to a run of Château d’Yquem vintages dating back to 1811—are reason enough for a visit on their own. But for one night, the attention was on the (otherwise discreet) bar under the Stonehouse.
